Week 1: TED for Today: Secret to Giving Feedback

After watching the video, please review the following questions:

Discussion Questions:

1. In our previous series, Decoding De-escalation, we frequently explored the role of the amygdala. How does what we learned inform the way we give and receive feedback in relation to this video?

2. The video states that feedback is often not helpful because it is (1) indirect and soft, making it difficult for the brain to recognize that feedback is being given or (2) too direct, leaving the other person defensive. Do you tend to be too indirect or too direct when giving feedback? How has this proved challenging?

3. The Four Step Formula for giving helpful feedback includes the following four steps:

  • The micro-yes

  • The data point

  • The impact statement

  • End on a question

 

Can you apply these four steps to the following scenario? (or use your own scenario)

  • Ted has been turning in a weekly data report on Thursday, but it's due on Monday. The report is used for a weekly update provided to multiple departments each Wednesday.
